It would be frustrating to spend a lot of time and effort perfecting how to put on gel nail polish only to find that it chips or peels off faster than you planned. Avoiding common mistakes can help ensure your gel manicure lasts longer and looks pristine. This article highlights six common mistakes to avoid when you have gel nail polish.

    1. Skipping Base Coat

Skipping the base coat before applying gel nail polish is a common mistake that can affect the longevity and appearance of your manicure. The base coat creates a smooth surface for the polish to adhere to, helping to prevent staining and enhancing the adhesion of the color coat.

It also acts as a protective barrier between your natural nails and the gel polish, reducing the risk of damage or weakening of the nails over time. Always apply a thin layer of base coat and allow it to dry properly before proceeding with the color coat to ensure a strong and durable gel manicure.

    2. Incorrect Application Technique

Proper application technique is crucial for achieving a flawless gel manicure. One common mistake is applying the polish too thickly or unevenly, which can lead to uneven curing and a lumpy finish.

Always apply thin, even coats of gel polish, starting from the center of the nail and working your way towards the edges. Avoid getting polish on the skin around the nails to prevent lifting and peeling. Take your time and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application to ensure optimal results.

    3. Improper Curing

For the gel polish to harden and set properly, it needs to be cured the right way. If the curing process is inadequate, the polish may remain tacky or prone to smudging, resulting in a less durable manicure.

Use the appropriate UV or LED lamp recommended for your gel polish and follow the recommended curing time. Ensure each layer of polish is cured thoroughly, including the base coat, color coat, and top coat, to achieve a long-lasting and glossy finish.

    4. Picking or Peeling

One of the most damaging habits is picking or peeling off gel nail polish. This can weaken and damage the natural nail bed, causing it to become thin and brittle over time.

Always use proper removal techniques by soaking nails in acetone or using gel polish remover wraps to gently lift the polish off without scraping or forcing it off. If the polish does not come off easily, repeat the removal process rather than picking at it, which can lead to unnecessary damage and weakening of the nails.

    5. Ignoring Maintenance

Maintaining your gel manicure is essential for preserving its appearance and longevity. Avoid exposing your nails to harsh chemicals or abrasive activities that can cause premature chipping or lifting of the polish.

To keep the nail beds moist and healthy, use cuticle oil regularly. This will help keep them from getting dry and brittle. If your manicure chips, fix it with a thin layer of polish and top coat to make it last longer between salon visits.

    6. Not Using Gloves

Exposing your gel manicure to harsh chemicals, such as cleaning products or detergents, without wearing gloves can cause the polish to break down and weaken over time.

Chemicals can strip away the protective layers of the polish, causing it to lift or chip prematurely. Always wear gloves when doing household chores or tasks that involve exposure to chemicals to protect your manicure and preserve its durability.
